The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
