A shadow market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, based on recent findings.
Investigational Treatment Gaining Popularity Online
Retatrutide, which is still in clinical trials, is being promoted by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning properties. Followers are encouraged to message these accounts privately for source information, while also receiving promotional offers.
Thriving Commerce on Social Networks
Separately, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where communities with numerous of members share “before and after” images, injection guides and claims of rapid British shipping. Vendors promote the substance there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Learning About The Experimental Drug
This medication is an investigational injectable developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Early trials suggest it could help patients reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.
Medical Experts Voice Worries
Nevertheless, doctors and pharmacists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unlicensed medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to users administering products of uncertain source.
Several professionals said the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing price of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Position and Implementation
Marketing retatrutide on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed medication that must not be marketed or supplied for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Some influencers attempt to sidestep the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted drug, but promotion and distribution can still violate medicines, advertising, and consumer laws, potentially leading to penalties, legal action or imprisonment.
Platform Reaction and Material Removal
Based on TikTok, the service has removed violative content and prohibited associated hashtags and search suggestions. The organization stated it was committed to keeping the platform safe and investing in strengthening compliance measures.
Online Trading Activities
Investigations also found communities with up to 9,000 participants selling the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in search feature, which functions like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with thousands of members, populated with images of slimming results, positive testimonials and step-by-step guides for preparing or administering at home.
Within minutes of entering one community, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where most purchases occur. The seller sent an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within two days. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one inquired about body mass, medical conditions or past usage.
Product Information and Pricing
Inside these communities, messages display black plastic packages with postal service labels, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can choose between powder vials, prepared at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled injectors typically priced at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should last, vendors give conflicting answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.
Platform Oversight and Security Actions
A spokesperson for Telegram stated it regularly moderated harmful content on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Expert Cautions
“People are administering materials they can’t verify. Even if the science behind this drug is valid, these online versions may not include what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.
A medical professional of an online medical service linked the increase in interest to current price rises for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, patients are turning to social media. But fake treatments are highly risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she said.
Her staff has already encountered patients injured by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
Manufacturer Position
A representative from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a company investigational product not yet approved … may subject users to potentially significant health risks”.
