EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
